QUESTIONS & ANSWERS FOR PILLAR 2: NUTRITION
23. How Fast Will the Fat Come Off?
Metabolically, a person can lose a maximum of about 2 to 3 real pounds of fat a week. Any other weight loss will be “phantom” weight—water and fluids. In the beginning, depending on how much excess fat you have, and how carefully you adhere to the nutrition plan, the weight may come off at this relatively high rate. Later, most people level out at about 1 real pound of fat a week. That’s a lot of fat over time. Again, remember that even though you’re losing the fat, you’ll be gaining muscle mass from exercise, so your losses on the scale may not reflect all the tightening and trimming that’s happening to your body. You’ll keep losing fat until your ratio of muscle to fat stabilizes at a natural, healthy equilibrium, which I promise you will be a higher state of fitness than you’ve ever experienced. At that point, you can adjust the program or maintain your level, based on your individual goals.
24. How Quickly Will I Notice Results?
You’ll feel trimmer in the first week. You’ll notice small changes, like your clothes getting looser, after 2 weeks. After 6 weeks of adherence to The 3 Pillars, people will be commenting about your appearance.
25. What About Taking Weight Loss Supplements?
The one supplement I take every day and that I recommend for everyone is a high-quality multivitamin and mineral combination. No matter how carefully we eat nowadays, a top-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement is the best insurance policy for optimal nutrition. Beyond vitamins, nearly every other supplement, particularly the weight loss enhancers, are highly controversial. They’re either miracle substances or dangerous, depending on which expert you listen to. There are “fat-blocker” drugs, but these may also block the transport of vitamins and vital nutrients into your cells. There are also metabolic enhancers like ephedra. These are really just another form of the stimulant “speed” and, like speed, they make you nervous and jittery; and they can be outright dangerous if you have high blood pressure. Take any supplements at your own risk, especially over the long term. At the very least, study the literature available in print or on the internet. Consult your doctor about weight loss supplements, and be aware that the government doesn’t regulate their manufacture, so always choose a company with a reputation for quality. My advice: eat 6 balanced meals and snacks a day, take your daily multivitamin, and work on your perfect Power-of-10 form at the gym.
26. I’m Already on a Nutritional Program That Works for Me. Do I Have to Switch?
If you’re following a program of balanced nutrition that’s not a diet but a long-term nutritional path, and if you are comfortably achieving the results you want, why rock the boat? Consider changing only if you’re not reaching your strength, energy, and appearance goals.
27. What If I Don’t Have Time to Eat 6 Times a Day?
Eating 6 times a day is an optimal goal.
